The”4 Ways To Stop Life Killing You” is the strapline of Balance Health and Fitness, one of Warwickshire’s most unique Fitness and Well-being companies. Ernie Boxall has been involved in the fitness field for over 40 years.
In my early years, football and boxing were a major part of my life, playing and training every day allowed me to make up for lack of speed and skill with an ability to run forever. I was working with good fitness coaches using the training methods of the time, methods which placed great emphasis on cardiovascular fitness and endurance. It wasn’t until much later in my life that flexibility and specific breathing exercises came to the fore.
The “4 Ways To Stop Life Killing You” do, however, begin with Cardiovascular fitness, which for me points to Circuit Training. The ability to bring the major muscle groups into play and raise the Heart Rate over a relatively short period makes the best use of the time available to exercise. The range of Circuits available makes it more efficient than simply relying on running, cycling, walking when we look at general fitness. Research has also shown that the body continues to burn calories for a longer period than the longer slower forms of exercise…I will be talking about the forms of cardiovascular work I use with my clients later..
“All exercise is movement and stillness. It’s just the amount of movement and the periods of stillness that change” that great comment came from an instructor on one of the workshops I attended a few years ago. At the age of 48, my body was wrecked from contact sports and I needed another form of exercise to keep my health intact. Running is now out for me because of knee trouble and climbing stairs a problem but through my 12-year involvement with Tai Chi, I am now able to continue my work as a Personal Trainer.
The benefits of my Tai Chi exercise program depend upon the commitment you give to the practice. The bare minimum will be the ability to complete patterns of movements..controlled steps forward, backward and to the side: balanced turning to face another direction: learned co-ordination of hand/leg movements: the improved sense of achievement as the set of movements are learned.
Tai Chi has many forms and many teachers, each teacher has their own interpretation of the particular set of movements in the form and their own way of teaching. You simply need to visit the class and go with an open mind, prepared to have a go. The myth of Tai Chi is that it is a form of exercise for the elderly. Balance Health and Fitness incorporate qigong exercises to strengthen the structure of the body through posture and breathing and Makka Ho exercises which I have used over the last twelve years. Makka Ho exercises have taken my flexibility to a whole new level,a level which can benefit all from rehabilitation from injury to athletic fitness programs. I will be writing more on Tai Chi later.
Shiatsu Therapy..is a therapy which at its basic form allows the body to relax to a point where stretching and pressure can be delivered to clients who have joint problems. Zen Shiatsu delivered correctly however, can reach a level of psychological benefits for clients suffering from trauma which may even date back to infancy or earlier. In my mind, one of the main benefits of shiatsu is that it must, to my mind, be delivered with the client fully-clothed. It can also be delivered lying on a futon on the floor: lying on a couch, sitting on the floor or in a chair. It is, therefore, accessible to most of the general public.
Shiatsu definitely lends itself to office productivity, pressure can be lifted from employees suffering stress through the high workload, headaches and joint pain allowing them to stay at the workplace and even increase their well-being. Employers who provide time for shiatsu therapy have given testimonials pointing to the way the staff has repaid them with loyalty. Plumbers and builders have given me testimonials about improved posture and mobility and decreased insomnia: Runners, walkers and even ice hockey professionals have used me to rehabilitate them after injury or training…more information on shiatsu will follow.
Eating and supplements..a minefield for any practitioner. What I don’t know about nutrition I have more qualified practitioners I can call on, people who have spent their lives developing research into the best foods for each specific group of people. Personally, I have been drawn towards Eating Plans developed by Dax Moy ” The Elimination Diet” and the products of Natures Sunshine Products and Forever Living Products. What I haven’t been drawn to are the dietitians who constantly tell the public that “a little bit of what you like is ok” No it isn’t, not if losing weight healthily is your aim; not if exercising to your maximum is your goal; not if “what you fancy” damages your organs and plays with your Psyche.
Eating plans change with your goals and the results you’ve reached at any particular time, but the basics of eating unprocessed foods remain the same. For me, a story King Harold goes some way in the direction of my thoughts. In 1066 England was attacked by Vikings in Yorkshire, Harold marched his troops from Wessex and defeated the invaders. He then learned that William had attacked from the south. Harold and the troops marched 240 miles in 13 days and although exhausted held the Normans at bay until they broke ranks and were defeated at Hastings. To my mind “They weren’t eating CRAP” they were fed from natural sources grown on the land they were passing through. Eating plans should be based on this, but I have benefited from the products of NSP and FLP in the past.
I will be writing more on this later..for more information go to www.health-24.us
